This image was created during Newport Folk Festival 2011. This was the first year of what was dubbed The Paste Magazine Ruins Sessions. Paste Magazine had set up a small recording area in one of the old living quarters of the fort. It wasn't anything fancy. A few mics, a couple cameras, and amazing natural light. Artists were scheduled throughout the day to play two or three songs of their choosing. As a photographer and music lover it was like hitting the lottery.
In this image are two of the founding members of The Carolina Chocolate Drops, Dom Flemings & Rhiannon Giddens. This session was like going for a ride on a musical time machine. Simply magical to witness and hard to explain in words.
To interpret the music and feel of the moment I surely wasn't picking up my digital camera. I opted instead for my Holga toy camera. It's a thirty dollar camera that shoots medium format film in square format. I shot some high speed black and white for this image. The result was exactly what I was looking to create.
