One of my favorite parts of photographing Newport Folk Festival is being able to observe what goes on before a band hits the stage for their performance. All the little nuances that go into crafting what we eventually watch, listen to, and enjoy is something that really gets the music geek in me excited.
In this image Jim James of My Morning Jacket is tuning his acoustic guitar. Sound check ran a little late so that the band could dial in their set. To the delight of fans who were hurrying in to secure their spots at the main stage, Jim took the opportunity to play a few songs for everyone. It is still one of my favorite memories being able to stand on the stage and watch them work out the kinks while fans, a bit confused enjoy their morning coffees to the sounds of Victory Dance, Slow Slow Tune & Golden. Not a bad way to kick off the day.
